French champions Bordeaux will be hoping that home advantage gives them the edge over Bayern Munich when the two sides lock horns in a Group A Champions League tie on Wednesday night. Bordeaux beat Maccabi Haifa 1-0 on Match Day 2, but have since gone on to lose both their league games. They were beaten 3-1 by St.Etienne and 1-0 by Auxerre, but fortunately for Laurent Blanc’s side, their rivals have not been able to take full advantage of Bordeaux’s slip ups.



Michael Ciani scored the winning goal against Maccabi. He headed home Gregory Sertic’s 83rd minute corner as Les Girondins huffed and puffed their way to a narrow 1-0 win. However Ciani was the villain when Auxerre beat Bordeaux on Saturday. The defender fouled Auxerre’s Cedric Hengbart in the box, and Valter Birsa sent Bordeaux No.1 Cedric Carrasso the wrong way to give Auxerre a crucial win.



Bayern beat SC Freiburg 2-1 on Saturday to give coach Louis Van Gaal some much needed respite. Young striker Thomas Muller put the Bavarian giants ahead before the break, firing one into the bottom corner after Luca Toni’s effort had been saved by Simon Pouplin. Toni started for the first time this season against Freiburg as Bayern were without Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery and Ivica Olic. Cha Du Ri’s own goal put Bayern 2-0 ahead, and Freiburg managed to pull one back late in the game through Stefan Reisinger.

Bayern currently lead Group A with four points from two games. They beat Maccabi Haifa 3-0 on the opening night, and then drew 0-0 with Italian giants Juventus on Match Day 2. Bordeaux also have the same number of points as Bayern, but are second because of their inferior goal difference.
